We are seeing a massive uptick in cyber security issues in
Myanmar. While Yoma Group itself hasn’t been identified as a target, it’s worth
reminding everyone to take extra special precautions in the coming days and
weeks. Below is a reminder around three major areas of weakness and ways to
help you manage.
Phishing
Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is a form of identity
theft that attempts to trick people into revealing personal or financial
information online. Phishers use phony Web sites or e-mail messages that appear
to be from trusted businesses and brands to steal personal information such as
usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers.
The messages can be hard to recognize as fake because they appear
to come from known sources with familiar logos and screen shots. Do NOT
respond to e-mail messages that ask you to provide or verify your personal
information.
Here are things you can do to see if an email is legit:
Incorrect
“From” Addresses: Many scam artists will use similar email addresses to
those of official companies and/or trusted parties. Always take a second
to double-check and make sure the address is correct. There is even an
email that came in from someone @yomastrateg1c.com. See how sneaky that
is? This is the fastest/easiest way to identify most spam.
Urgent
Action Required: The vast majority of phishing attacks rely on pushing the
recipient to act quickly, before they take the time to execute proper
caution. Any email with this kind of urgency should be scrutinized.
Fraudulent
Links: You should always hover over a link in an email before clicking on
it. By doing so, you will see what the actual web address is that you’ll
be taken to. It’s a common misconception that the address displayed is
also the site you’ll pull up if you click on it.
Remember, ALL internal messages about access to IT resources will
come from an email that ends in @yoma.com.mm (most of the time it will be from helpdesk@yoma.com.mm) or personally from one of our Group Technology staff. If
you are unclear, please forward the email to helpdesk@yoma.com.mm to verify.
Group
Password Policy
Our policy for passwords requires everyone to change their passwords every 90 days. There are two ways to do this. If you are at the office, you can click CTRL+ALT+DEL and select “Change Password”. Since most of you are WFH right now, you can go to //password.yomagroup.io to make your password changes. We will send you three reminder emails that look like the below. Yes, these are legit, and they are meant to remind you when to address your passwords. If you do not change your passwords every 90 days, your access to our systems will be blocked, including your email and wifi.
SMS
I have
written below that you should stick to apps that have end to end encryption.
What I didn’t explicitly tell you is that SMS does not have that level of
encryption and you should view all SMS links as suspicious. Many 2 factor
authenticators allow you to use SMS to verify a code, including the
Authenticator app we use for Microsoft. We will be turning this feature off.
For those of you who currently use SMS for your 2FA, helpdesk will be reaching
out to you to migrate you to the in-app 2FA option, which is much safer.
On your
personal apps, never click on SMS links that tell you to log in to things. If
you have received a verification code from a service you did not initiate,
ignore that SMS, log in to your app and trigger a password change. Again, I must
stress the importance of 2FA for all your personal accounts. If you feel that
you have been compromised, please contact the Helpdesk immediately.
As always,
please contact the Helpdesk or me if you have any questions or require
assistance.
If you are having trouble withdrawing cash out from ATM, you can
transfer cash from your Yoma Bank Smart Account to your WavePay account and
collect your cash from Wave Money Shop. Follow below step by step graphic and
video guides.
All salary
payment will be paid by Yoma Bank into employees’ Smart Account as usual this
month. We will not be making any payments into Wave Accounts this month. You
can only withdraw cash from your Yoma Bank Smart Account at Yoma Bank ATM
Machines.
Most of you will know that there has been a Draft of a new Cyber Law that was circulated yesterday. I would like to remind everyone that this is still a draft that is to be reviewed by Telcos and ISPs. That said, I think it’s worth addressing some of what’s being proposed so you understand how to keep yourselves safe online.
First and foremost, you should stick to apps and services that have end to end encryption. There is a lot of discussion about your data being intercepted and held in local data centers. The reality is that there is no way for anyone, including the Telcos or ISPs to actually unencrypt messages from services unless they have an encryption key. So, your work emails and OneDrive files are all safe.
There has also been a lot of noise about Deep Packet Inspection or DPI. This is highly sophisticated technologies that might, at best, say that you sent a message on Whatsapp but again, would not be able to unencrypt what was said.
So, in the meantime, stick to online services that have end to end encryption. If you are uncertain, please ask the Helpdesk. Generally speaking, all the major international services like Facebook, Whatsapp, Signal have strong encryption protocols. VPNs add an additional layer of security but please remember that not all VPNs are safe and to check with the list we have provided. Finally, turn on your 2FAs for all your personal accounts.
There is going to continue to be some uncertainty over the coming days about all of this, but it was worth sending you a quick reminder on what you can do now. Please stay safe everyone!
We will continue with our working from home arrangement until further notice. Please reach out to your manager or entity head if you have any further questions regarding WFH arrangements.
Your safety is the most important priority for us so please stay safe. Thank you.
There has been some instability of the internet over the past few days. Here is the information to help you stay safe online. Below are some tips and guidelines for what you should do, both with your work but also personal accounts to be as secure as possible.
VPNs
There is a difference between the VPN we make you use to access some systems and a consumer VPN that protects your browsing. Those of you using our Global Protect system should be aware it does not protect your general internet usage; it just lets you link to our servers.
We recommend that you use a VPN on your phone and computers but note that not all VPNs are safe to use! Please do NOT download random VPNs to your devices. We have provided a safe list below but reach out to helpdesk if you need assistance verifying the legitimacy of any VPN before you download it.
Here is a list of safe VPNs that we recommend. We will keep updating this list as some may experience disruption.
If you are at the Campus, Star City or PHH you will not need to use a VPN as that network security is managed and maintained by Group Technology.
Backing up files and emails
Rest assured that all of your emails and files on OneDrive are safe. They are all on Microsoft servers and even if there is disruption to our services, once services are restored then everything will sync. This is like when you turn your phone to airplane mode, once you’re back online, things sync up again.
That said, there may be files you will want access to, even if you are offline for a short period of time. Below are instructions on how to ensure these files are on your machine so you can access them at all times.
I wouldn’t download all your OneDrive as you may not have enough space on your computer, and it could impact the speed of your computer dramatically.
I know there’s been a lot of disruption to Workplace chat over the past few days. We are currently migrating our work chat groups over to Yoma Connect and Teams which have remained more stable.
There has been a lot of talk in Myanmar of downloading other chat apps that do not run on wifi networks like Bridgefy. I would highly caution you against this as they are not secure and expose you and your phone to some very bad behaviour.
2 Factor Authentication
If you have not already done so, please turn on 2FA for all or your personal accounts such as FB, Gmail, Whatsapp, etc.
Please contact the helpdesk if you need help with this.
I hope this helps answer some of the most common questions we have
been getting. As always, the helpdesk is around to support as needed or feel
free to reach out to me directly if you have any other questions.
Please stay safe everyone.
Yoma Car Share, one of the first IoT projects in Myanmar
When we talk about Yoma Car Share, if a person has never heard of it, the response is always “Really?”, “You can do that?”, “In Myanmar?”, “How?”, etc. The surprise and the incredulity give you a thrill and the satisfaction you get when the person goes ahead, uses our services, and gives feedback of “amazing.” Yoma Car Share is the brainchild of Yoma Fleet in bringing IoT (Internet of Things) to the people of Myanmar. Our goal is to “build a better Myanmar for its people” through technology and bring the standard to the next level.
So, what exactly is Yoma Car Share?
Yoma Car Share is a self-drive hourly to monthly car rental that is cashless, keyless, contactless, system automated, and available nationwide. From making the reservation to payment, the system is managing seamlessly, giving us the operational efficiency in offering better services.
We are always thinking about how to make our users’ journey easier and more flexible. We introduced the tap card system to access our cars in 2018 and the app in 2019. In 2022, we upgraded our app with Yoma Car Share 2.0 and introduced a Yoma Car Share Driver app, an app for our user’s travel companion to access the car.
We are not stopping here and upgrading the app regularly with versions using the Agile (Scrum) methodology.
PLUS+ by Yoma Fleet – Easier, Faster, Smarter Lease-to-Buy Program in Myanmar
It all started with a “Phone”.
At Yoma Fleet, we wanted to be a part of Yoma Group’s People Initiative 2020 program. We came up with the idea that every Yoma employee should have access to a smartphone without the need to use expensive and cumbersome financing providers. We launched YOMA+ in November 2020 for Yoma employees in collaboration with Yoma Group HR to lease-to-buy phones and tablets through monthly repayment from their salary. By 2022, YOMA+ is now called PLUS+ by Yoma Fleet. We have onboarded 25 organizations on PLUS+, and it is growing. On PLUS+, employees can lease-to-buy consumer electronics, hotel and travel packages, cosmetics, healthcare, and education services.
There is no document required and our turnaround time from order submission to approval is within 1 day and collection 2-3- days after, positioning PLUS+ as an Easier, Faster, and Smarter lease-to-buy program.
All organizations access our products and services from the same portal. PLUS+ allows operations, HRs, suppliers, and employees to use the same system and technology making PLUS+ unique and user-friendly.
PLUS+ started out as an MVP (minimum viable product) but it has grown so much. We continue to incorporate the feedback for improvements and will soon be introducing an upgraded version of PLUS+ with an app.
To learn more about PLUS+ and explore available products and services, visit the following websites.

The future is here with AR glasses
The release of Meta’s AR glasses is part of a broader push by the company to expand its presence in the AR and VR markets. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that he believes AR and VR will be the next major computing platform, and that his company is investing heavily in these technologies in order to be at the forefront of this shift.
Latest news says Meta’s first true AR glasses are expected to hit the market in 2027. The project, codenamed Orion, has been in development for eight years. It will be a more technologically advanced and expensive piece of hardware that can project high-quality holograms of avatars into the physical environment.
Introducing Microsoft 365 Copilot
Copilot combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with your data in the Microsoft Graph and the Microsoft 365 apps to turn your words into the most powerful productivity tool.
Copilot is integrated into Microsoft 365 in two ways. It works alongside you, embedded in the Microsoft 365 apps you use every day — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and more.
Business Chat works across the LLM, the Microsoft 365 apps, and your data — your calendar, emails, chats, documents, meetings and contacts — to do things you’ve never been able to do before.
You can give it natural language prompts like “Tell my team how we updated the product strategy,” and it will generate a status update based on the morning’s meetings, emails and chat threads.
With Copilot, you’re always in control. You decide what to keep, modify or discard. Now, you can be more creative in Word, more analytical in Excel, more expressive in PowerPoint, more productive in Outlook and more collaborative in Teams.
GitHub data shows that Copilot promises to unlock productivity for everyone. Among developers who use GitHub Copilot, 88% say they are more productive, 74% say that they can focus on more satisfying work, and 77% say it helps them spend less time searching for information or examples.
Note As of March 2023, Copilot is only available in technical preview mode and is accessible through OpenAI’s Codex platform.
